Since its foundation in 1976 the museum was situated in a rather small and narrow building. The building used to be the stable of the Women's School (Kvennaskólinn) in Blönduós.

The construction for the new building was started in Oktober 2001. It was designed by the architect Guðrún Jónsdóttir. Today the museum has space of around 250 square metres available, with the old building integrated into the building. (see to the right of above picture)

The museum's new building was opened with a big party on May 9, 2003.
