Viðey

Viðeyjarstofa, Viðey House, was built in 1753-1755 from stone,
quarried locally, and was the largest house in Iceland at that time.
Viðeyjarstofa is the oldest house in Reykjavík.
Viðey, Wood Island, is the largest island in Faxaflói,
and is now a part of the city of Reykjavík.
Viðey is ca. 1.5 km (1 mile) square, and is really two islands,
Heimaey, Home Island, and Vesturey, West Island,
connected by a low strip of land.
Viðey was a part of the settlement of Ingólfur Arnarson,
but is not mentioned, as such, in records until in
the 12th century. Archaeological digs have proven that the
island has been in residence since the 10 century.
In 1225 a monastery was established there
dedicated to St. Augustine.
The stamp was issued in 1978 with a face value of 80 krónur.
Artist: Þröstur Magnússon
Printed in Heliogravure by Courvoisier.
