Skaftafell

Locator

Skaftafell

The farm of Skaftafell stands under the imposing
glacier Vatnajökull, the part seen is Skaftafellsjökull.
The farm and the surrounding area are a nature preserve
Skaftafell, which is one of the most beautiful in Iceland.

Skaftafell is located in the settlement of
Helgi Heyangurs-Bjarnason, but in early times it became part
of the Svínafell holdings.
The surrounding area, Skaftafellssýslur - West and East,
take their name from this farm, and in the Saga era
a local thing was held that was named Skaftafellsþing,
but the actual site of that thing has been lost.
Things were held in all the old Icelandic districts in
preparation for the Althing. Matters not resolved locally
were raised at the Althing.

The stamp was issued in 1986 with a face value of 10 krónur.
Artist: Þröstur Magnússon
Printed in Heliogravure by Courvoisier.
