Seyðisfjörður

Locator

Buildings in Seydisfjordur

Seyðisfjörður was at the turn of this century the main
town in Eastern Iceland, this was mainly due to the catch
of herring in the fjord.
In 1906 a Transatlantic telephone cable was connected
to Seyðisfjörður by The Great Nordic Telephone Company,
and Seyðisfjörður was the first Icelandic town to
be directly connected to the outside world.

The settler in Seyðisfjörður was
Bjólfur, who has a mountain
named after him. Otherwise he seems to have
been a peaceful man, as no stories survive about him.

The stamp was issued in 1986 with a face value of 12 krónur.
Artist: Þröstur Magnússon.
