A view of the Pond and Reykjavík center
late in the 19th century.
At this time Reykjavík was still a small
mainly rural community.
The man with the scythe is heading
for the fields, or returning from mowing.
The Pond was much larger in those days, almost
reaching Reykjavik Cathedral,
which today is 60 meters (200 feet) from the edge of the Pond.

The stamp was issued in 1986 with a face value of 12 krónur,
to commemorate the 200 year anniversary of The City Charter.
Artist: Þröstur Magnússon
Engraver: Czeslaw Slania.
