Lómagnúpur

Lómagnúpur stands to the west of
Skeiðarársandur, and
is a part of a larger mountain called Björninn, The Bear.
An imposing and a very beautiful sight,
Lómagnúpur reaches a height of 688 meters (2250 feet).
Lómagnúpur features in Brennu-Njáls
saga - The Saga of Burnt Njall.
Flosi Þórðarson, the main instigator of the
burning of Njáll and his family, had a dream where he was at
Lómagnúpur, and he walked out and
looked at the mountain, which opened and a man,
wearing a goatskin and carrying an iron staff,
stepped out of the mountain.
The man called out the names of
25 of Flosi's companions at the
burning of Njáll, struck his staff against the ground
and went back into the mountain.
All of the men that the mountain dweller
named were killed in revenge for the burning of Njáll.
The stamp was issued in 1990 with a face value of 200 krónur.
Artist: Þröstur Magnússon
