Kverkfjöll

Locator

Kverkfjoll

Kverkfjöll, a mountain range on the north side of
Vatnajökull, are ca 10 km (6 miles) long and split
in two by a narrow pass, Kverkin, which gives
the mountains their name.
The highest peak of Kverkfjöll is 1920 meters (6300 feet) high.

In Kverkfjöll is a large hot spring area, mainly
in a valley, Hveradalur, Hot Spring Valley.
The largest steam hot spring in Iceland is there,
called Glámur.
The area of the hot springs is ca 10 km (4 miles) square.
From under the glacier Kverkjökull issues a
warm brook that has created a large cave in the glacier.

The stamp was issued in 1991 with a face value of 300 krónur.
Artist: Þröstur Magnússon
Printed in Heliogravure by Courvoisier.
