Jökulsárgljúfur, Glacier River Gorge, is a
nature preserve since 1973. A beautiful place, where the
harmony of light and nature delight the senses.
Lava formations of all kinds abound in Jökulsárgljúfur.
The gorge is really two gorges, separated by a valley,
and there are several waterfalls in the river,
Jökulsá á Fjöllum, Glacier River in the Mountains,
that flows through the gorge.
The most famous is Dettifoss, the most powerful
of all waterfalls in Europe.

Jökulsárgljúfur is close to the settlement
of Ljótur óþveginn, Ugly the Unwashed,
which is probably the settler with the strangest name on record.

The stamp was issued in 1986 with a face value of 12 krónur.
Artist: Þröstur Magnússon
Printed in Heliogravure by Courvoisier.
