Hálendið - The Highlands

The precarious existence of the Icelandic Flora
in the Highlands shows up very well on these photos.

The attitude of many Icelanders toward the vegetation of the Highlands is summed up by one of our better poets, Jón Helgason:
Séð hef ég skrautleg suðræn blóm
sólvermd í hlýjum garði;
áburð og ljós og aðra virkt
enginn til þeirra sparði;
mér var þó löngum meir í hug
melgrasskúfurinn harði,
runninn upp þar sem Kaldakvísl
kemur úr Vonarskarði.
I have seen ornate southern flora
Sunbaked in a warm garden;
Fertilizer and light and other things
Nobody begrudged them;
I was more concerned with
The hardy tuft of grass,
Originating where Cold Fork
exits of the Pass of Hope.

Apologies for the translation.
