Peysuföt

Peysufot
The Peysuföt, literal translation is Sweater Suit, was the everyday wear
for women in Iceland well into this century,
especially in the countryside.
I can remember old ladies that never wore anything else.
Named after the sweater that was worn as a top,
this was the simple form of the National Costume.
The skirt and apron usually were of simple, inexpensive material.
The scarf in this illustration is more ornate than the one usually worn,
this type of costume now only being used on special occasions.

Detail of Ornaments
The Skotthúfa, or Tail Cap, is very distinctive.
The tail is made up of many small strands of material,
and just below the top of the tail, there is a richly ornamented silver,
or gold, sleeve. (Inside the white circle.)
