Old New Year's Cards

One of the things that characterizes a people are the cards they send to each other on Holidays and other occasions. The examples of New Year's cards on these pages are but a small glimpse of this facet of Icelandic holiday cards.

While never as popular as Yule cards, for a period they were quite common, and in their way they are just as delightful. The inevitable poems grace their fronts, and while their sentiments are somewhat different than those of Yule cards, their poems are also filled with bright, good wishes.

The New Year's cards on these pages, dating from 1914 to 1930, are from the collection of Þorsteinn Pálsson.
