Hrossagaukur - Common Snipe
Gallinago gallinago

The Common Snipe is mainly a summer visitor but there are always a few birds that reside the year round, mainly near ditches and in geothermal areas. One of the sweetest sounds of summer is the "neighing" of the Common Snipe, which made by the tail feathers when the bird is on the downswing of its wavy flight. Length is about 28 cms - about 11 inches.
The stamp was issued in 1995 with a face value of 250 krónur.
Artist: Þröstur Magnússon.
