Icelandic guitarist, Bjorn Thoroddsen, travels to Manitoba to play killer solos on Gershwin tunes. Thoroddsen is an unassuming man, but put a guitar in his hand and give him a solo spot and he takes the music to another level.

The best performers made the most out of the this opportunity. One such musican is Icelandic guitarist Björn Thoroddsen. His performance at NASA with guitarist Leni Stern was a marked contrast to the gently fleet lines he contributes to clarinetist Jorgen Svar´s Jazz airs ( Zonet). In what became a reenactment of John Henry tale, Stern´s electric lead had a hard time keeping pace with Thoroddsen´s powerful acoustic tone and expansive array of ideas.

We also were witness of outstanding guitar playing mr. Thoroddsen. It is impossible to play that fast. You can only be thankful for such an outstanding performance and the roar of the audience clearly showed this - yes, indeed, it was a lavish top-playing concert for an enthusiastic hall.

"Svare's mainstream clarinet playing possesses a high quality of authenticity which - like the integrity that characterises the acoustic and equilibristic fingering of guitar player Bjorn Thoroddsen - creates the basis of the music on this CD recorded in Iceland. It brings back happy memories of the Django Reinhardt/Stephan Grappelly Hot Club of France Band combining at the same time innovation with the well-known.

“Thoroddsen played the guitar every bit the way an Icelandic jazz musican at the front rank should do”

“Thoroddsen is a monster player and enterteining showman, playing every nook and cranny of his guitar”

“One thing stood above the rest during the concert: Thoroddsen's solos. I have rarely heard him play better and a strong swing and imagination lifted many of his improvisations to fantastic levels”.

“I've been a fan of Björn Thoroddsen for a long time. He has in a short time become one of our greatest guitarists and even one of Europes best jazz musicians”
