Lillian Raines has been portrayed by Tina Sloan since 1983. She's the head nurse at Cedars. When she arrived in Springfield, she was married to Bradley Raines. Lillan has a daughter named Beth Raines. Beth was being abused by her stepfarher but she didn't tell her mother about it. She didn't even tell her about the fact that Bradley had raped her. Alexandra however found out the truth and had Bradley arrested. Lillian divorced Bradley when she found out. At this time Beth started dating Alexandra's son, Lujack. Lillian started dating Detective Jeff Saunders but that was a very short and uneventful realationship.

In the late 1985, Lillian's sister Calla Matthews came to Springfield with her teenage daughter Jessie Matthews. Calla started dating Ross Marler but Jesse started dating Simon Hall. Calla had syphilis but Lillian and Ross stood by her through the whole thing. But as for Lillian's romance, she got involved with Hawk Shayne. In the early 1987 Hawk proposed to Lillian and she accepted.But their relationship was doomed from the beginning. Soon, Hawk's ex-wife Sarah Shayne came to town to be with Reva. Hawk and Sarah began growing closer and closer together so Lillian and Hawk finally broke up. Hawk and Sarah got married in 1989.

Lillian's next romance was Ed Bauer. Ed was married to Maureen but he just couldn't control his feelings. Lillian had breast cancer at this time and Ed was her doctor. That's how the affair started. One night they were trapped in the Cedars parking garage and made love. Then Ed ended the affair. Lillian wrote Ed a letter which Maureen found and read. She was furious and confronted Ed about the affair at the cabin. She rushed out of the cabin and was killed in a car accident. Ed's daughter,Michelle was also furious and blamed Lillian for her mom's death. Lillian considered leaving town. That was Lillian's last romance and also her last big storyline.
