Griffin Williams

In 1995, a somewhat cocky friend of Dinah Marler's named Marcus Williams came to Springfield to try and land a local gig at one of the local Springfield Clubs. However, in 1996 when he was falsely accused for the murder of Springfield Detective Patrick Cutter, his father civil rights activist Griffin Williams came to town to help his son. In the beginning, his presence was something of a force to be reckoned with. He marched into the 5th Street Diner with his two bodyguards during Cutter's wake which also served as a graduation celebration for the cadets of the Police Academy one of which was Frank Cooper. As he entered, he demanded to know who was responsible for the arrest of his son and he told the people that as along as he lived he would see to it that "No Black Man would ever be unjustly treated by the law." The black patrons looked at him with admiration and pride while the white patrons looked at him with a respect that bordered on fear. One person in particular was Gilly Grant who had read about the man who contributed so much to improving the lives of visible minorities.

He also had a friend in Fletcher Reade whom he worked with closely during The Freedom Riders Movement in the 1960's. It was also during that time that he used his influence to help prevent 5th Street into being demolished by Alan Spaulding and when several of the patrons got arrested, he lead them in the civil rights anthem "We Shall Overcome". He also got a job teaching Black History at Springfield U, and it was during that time that Gilly started working with him as his Public Relations Manager. They even played a joke on a student by having Gilly pretend to be his "wife", not knowing that they were actually related. Vivian, on the other hand was getting very worried about how close Griffin and her daughter were becoming and when she realized that she still had strong feelings for him, she reconsummated the relationship with him. Sadly enough, Gilly almost did the same thing and then the cat was out of the bag. Griffin was Gilly's father not Charles.

She was conceived during a one night stand on one hot night in the South in the 1960's and at first Gilly was devastated and was in denial but when Charles her "Daddy" confirmed it, she was heartbroken knowing that she almost slept with her own father. Shortly afterwards, the scandal hit all the newspapers and made Griffin and Gilly laughingstocks but the worst was yet to come. Griffin decided to deliberately set up his own fake assasination to have the people stop gossiping about him and when he got arrested, it was Alan Spaulding who bailed him out. What was so ironic was that it was Griffin who managed to convince Alan to confess his sinful deeds because they will always come back to haunt you. Shortly afterwards, Alan admitted to Phillip that it was he to deliberately set him up for The Towers Bombing.

Unfortunately, the scandal would have serious repurcussions for The Grant Family. Gilly left for Europe and although she did some hitchiking and travelling, she settled in Europe where she is a successful writer following in the footsteps of other African-American Icons like Richard Wright, James Baldwin and Langston Hughes. David moved to Colorado and worked closely on behalf of the "movement" who recently returned to Springfield and is currently working with Harley Cooper on trying to capture the 5th Street Stalker. As for Griffin, he is know a judge in Springfield but due to his lack of prescence like Dahlia, he hardly see him. He will probably leave Springfield to go to Washington, DC to join "The Black Caucus" which has become a force to be reckoned with in The Nation's Capital.
