Beth Raines has been portrayed by two actresses. The first one was Judi Evans and she was Beth from 1983 to 1986. The other Beth is Beth Chamberlin. She was Beth from 1989 to 1991 and again from 1997 to the present. Beth is the daughter of nurse Lillian Raines. When Beth arrived in Springfield, she befriended Rick Bauer, Phillip Spaulding and Mindy Lewis. Phillip was dating Mindy and Beth was dating Rick. Phillip however fell in love with Beth and and that made Rick furious. Beth and Phillip finally admitted their true feelings for each other. Beth's abusive stepfather found them however and told Phillip the truth about his parentage. Phillip rushed to his father and Bradley raped Beth. Beth didn't tell Phillip about the rape because she felt so guilty and dirty. Phillip then turned to Mindy again and they made love.

Bradley however, didn't leave poor Beth alone so she and Phillip fled to New York together. When they returned to Springfield, Phillip's aunt Alex was back from Europe. She helped Beth and Phillip stay together despite the fact that Alan wanted her away from Phillip. She later helped them get Bradley arrested for the rape. Then Mindy found out that she was pregnant with Phillip's baby. Phillip broke up with Beth and married Mindy. Mindy then lost the baby. Beth then fell in love with Rick again but that didn't work out. Beth then got involved with Alexandra's son, Lujack. Phillip was very jealous and conspired with Andy to ruin Lujack's new night club. Andy however went to far and blew up the whole club, leaving Beth blinded. Lujack stood by Beth trough the whole thing. Then he went undercover to find out the truth about the explosion. Alex's stepdaughter India Von Halkein found out the truth and blackmailed Phillip into marriage.

Lujack then found out the truth and threatened to kill Andy. Later Andy turned up dead and of course Lujack went to prison. The real murderer turned out to be Floyed Parker. Lujack was released and now he and Beth could get married. Then Jackson Freemont arrived in Springfield. Jackson fell in love with Beth and that made Lujack jealous as hell. Then Beth and Jackson were taken hostage in a plot to kill Kyle Sampson. Lujack, Kyle and a guy named Kurt Corday fled to the ship to rescue Beth and Jackson. The ship exploded and Lujack was killed. It took some time for Beth to recover but when she did, she got involved with Phillip again. She started working for professor Blackburn at a local museum. Blackburn shot Phillip and took Beth hostage. Then his body was found at the bottom of a lake called Stony Lake. Beth was missing and presumed dead. Phillip accepted the fact that Beth was dead and got involved with Chelsea Reardon.

Beth didn't show up again until 1989. She had been brought to town by the evil Neil Everest. She unfortunately had amnesia and couldn't talk. Eventually, she got her memory back, she fell in love with Phillip all over again. Phillip was then married to Blake Thorpe who wanted to get her hands on the Spaulding fortune. Blake tried many things to keep Phillip away from Beth but none of her schemes worked. Phillip and Beth moved in together and were very happy. Then Beth got pregnant with Phillip's child. Neil then turned up dead and Phillip became the prime suspect. He asked Rick to help him fake his own death by stealing a body from Cedars. While Phillip was away trying to prove his innocent, Rick fell in love with Beth. They got married but when Rick realized that Beth was still in love with Phillip, he let her go. Phillip and Beth got married and Beth gave birth to a baby girl. They went to Arezona to do community service but Rick moved to Chicago.

Beth didn't return to Springfield until 1997, divorced from Phillip. When she came back, she was determined to get Phillip back and made things very complicated for Phillip and his new girlfriend Harley. Unfortunately, Beth's abusive ex-boyfriend Carl Stevens followed her to Springfield and began to threaten her. After agreeing to meet with him, Beth and Carl struggle and a shot was fired that killed Carl. Beth was horrified to see that the person holding the gun was Lizzie! After the murder, there were several possible suspects, including her mother. Beth maintained her claim that she was the one who had shot Carl in self-defense; however, Phillip and Harley refused to buy her story and continued to press for the truth. When the truth came out, Beth was certain that Phillip would chose his family over Harley and was heartbroken when he chose to marry Harley instead. After losing Philip to Harley, Beth moved on to a relationship with Jim Lemay. Jim's daughter, Susan was vehemently opposed to Beth seeing her father and did everything she could to undermine the relationship and Beth's confidence. Luckily, none of Susan's tricks worked, and Beth and Jim became engaged.

However, Beth's life still wouldn't be perfect. While on a business trip in San Cristobel with Philip, Beth & Philip's helicopter went down. Stranded on a snowy mountain, and believing they were going to die, Beth and Philip prepared a video tape to be made for their daughter. Emotions high, they started reminiscing about the past and sought comfort in each other arms (with the video still recording). After they were rescued, both decided to keep their lovemaking a secret and go on with their separate lives. Then the unexpected happened: Beth became pregnant with Philip's child. Convinced that Philip would leave Harley to marry her again, Beth told him about the child. When Philip refused, she became afraid that Jim would leave her and threatened to have an abortion if Philip told anyone the child was his. And so worried about Beth's state of mind (as well as his own marriage) Philip reluctantly agreed to keep the child's true paternity a secret. Unfortunately, their tryst wasn't a complete secret: Prince Edmund has the missing video and holding it over Philip's head. Though he was blackmailing Philip, Beth saw some good in Edmund and confided in him.

At the same time this was going on, Beth learned that her daughter was suffering from leukemia. In the months of Beth's pregnancy, Lizzie's condition continued to worsen, until finally her only chance of survival was a bone marrow transfusion from the child Beth was carrying. With Lizzie deteriorating fast and the baby still not due for weeks, Beth had to make a choice: wait until the baby is born and hope Lizzie survives, or induce labor and hope the baby survives. With doctors telling her the baby's chance of survival were good, Beth agreed to the procedure only for Jim to refuse! Though she and Philip tried valiantly to change his mind, he was adamant and Philip was forced to reveal the truth: Jim had no choice because he was not the child's father. With Lizzie's life at stake, Beth was forced to admit the truth to Jim. With him by her side, Beth gave birth to a son.
