She came to Springfield from Chicago in 1994 as the recipient of a prestigious award given by Cedars Hosptial, and it was at that party that she met Joshua Lewis, the much married and widowed executive who helped run Lewis Oil with his father, the late HB Lewis. Now when Annie first came to the town, she was an enigma because she was very secretive about her life. The only thing we, the viewers knew was that she had a tie to Rick Bauer, at first we thought she blackmailed him or the other way around but in reality she was his wife whose marriage was shattered because she became an alcoholic. To give her credit, she started attending AA Meetings and for a brief time became an active member in the organization. Little idea did she realize that she was moving into a town with some very "emotionally unstable" people.

This was never more obvious when she witnessed the screaming match between Roger Thorpe and Holly Lindsay in The Bauer Household on Christmas Day, 1994. A couple of days later, 5th Street, Springfield's Blue Collar Section was burned when Billy Lewis Jr., accidently set fire when he discovered that his mother Vanessa was having an affair with Matt Reardon. Josh on the other hand became a town hero when he saved the life of Marina Cooper and her Aunt Lucy when her parents Frank & Eleni were out of town and when Josh broke his leg, it was Annie that was his nurse. What started out as a friendship developed into love so when Josh asked for her hand in marriage, she didn't realize that she was marrying a man who was very emotionally tied to the past. He had other unsuccessful marriages to other women including Sonni Carrera whom he later discovered was actually her twin sister Solita. He also dated a woman named Morgan Richards who would later marry a man named Kelly Nelson. He even briefly dated a woman named Tangie Hill but like Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares To You", only one woman could fill that void.

His childhood sweetheart Reva Shayne, whom he met when he was only five years old who was and still continues to be the love of his life. Maybe if Annie had known about their past, she would have stayed away from him but she didn't. Yet, when Josh found out that Annie was once married to Rick Bauer, he called off the engagement and although Annie was crushed, she had enough pride not to beg. It wasn't until Josh had a talk with HB that he told his youngest son something about himself that was painful to hear but so very true. He wanted a woman the opposite of Reva and when she wasn't anything like Reva, he didn't want to be around her. He realized then that he was punishing every woman in his life for what he felt that Reva did to him but he realized that his late beloved wouldn't want him to mourn her death for the rest of his life so he asked Annie to marry him and she happily said yes.

However, these were two people who should have never gotten together because they had too many unresolved issues on a personal level. Josh married Annie because he was tired of being alone and Annie married Josh because she thought that her love for him was going to be enough. Unfortunately it wasn't because Annie's marriage to Josh ended on her Wedding Day when Alex Spaulding rushed into the Carousel that Josh built for Annie to announce that Reva Shayne was alive. At first, the guests thought that Alex was playing a cruel trick but it was true, so when Josh rushed to The Spaulding Jet and saw Reva there he was dumbfounded and angry. She was alive all this time and she didn't say anything, why did she do such a cruel trick but she explained why. She saw Josh and the children from a distance with Annie and when Alan convinced her that they were better off without her she decided to leave. To give Annie credit, she did give Josh the option of leaving her and although he may have jumped on the offer, he chose not to especially when he discovered that Reva had married Buzz Cooper.

However, as time went on, Annie's marriage to Josh began to unravel because she was dealing with a man who had very strong ties to The Shayne Family. Hawk Shayne, Reva's father continued to make Josh feel guilty for not being with Reva and Sara Shayne who was Reva's mother still continued to get financial support from Josh while living in Italy. So to deal with this stress, she started taking pills to the point that she got addicted. The hospital found out and Josh along with some friends held an intervention headed by Rachel Sullivan, a substance abuse counselor and each person told Annie how bad her addiction was. Eventually, the hospital fired her for her addiction and although she went through heavy detox at The Bauer Cabin, she still felt threatened by Reva's prescence when she saw Josh and "their" children having a wonderful evening together.

The only person that gave her a professional break was Alan Spaulding who hired her to help him with some physiotherapy which annoyed Josh and when Annie schemed and got pregnant through artificial insemination, she received some tough talk from Alan when he said "If a child is supposed to keep a man to one's bosom, remember Reva has two of his children." When she suffered a miscarriage she knew that Josh would leave her immediately so she deliberately made it look like that Reva pushed her down the stairs when she didn't which resulted in a nasty trial but thanks to Griffin Williams, a lawyer and civil rights worker in his own right, she was acquited on all charges.

She and Alan started living together and when it was discovered that she had faked her own death in Chicago and allowed her first husband named Bobby to take the rap for her crime, she got arrested at her own Wedding to Alan Spaulding much to the chagrin and surprise of the town. She pulled off her most daring caper when she managed to get Reva Shayne a hostage on a plane and when the plane went down, she went down with it but miraculously survived. Several months later, Annie came back in the form of Teri DeMarco, a detective. She had met the real Teri DeMarco at a vacation spot in the Islands. After Teri had an accident, leaving her in a coma, Annie got a plastic Surgeon to help recreate Teri's face on her own.

When she arrived back in Springfield as Teri DeMarco, she got a job at the Springfield PD as Frank's partner. The only one who knew it was her was Dinah, who recognized her old friend by her habits. Annie began drugging Josh with some kind of hypnotic drug and tried to get him to fall in love with Cassie, hate Reva, and Love her. None of these worked and all her tricks were finally revealed when Reva and Josh found the real Teri DeMarco in the clinic where Annie had left her. Finally, after revealing the two Teri DeMarco's, Frank, arrested Annie and Teri went back to her old life. Annie is now in jail looking for a way to escape. She has been thinking about Bill Lewis and what he could possibly do for her.

Meanwhile Alan has hired Ben with the promise of Lewis Oil if he gets Annie out of Jail and found not guilty. During her incarceration, though, Annie set fire to her mattress and escaped when the guard opened the door. She hitched a ride with a trucker and hid out at this supposedly abandoned camp area. While she was there she saw Holly, who had just kidnapped all of the Springfield children. Annie declared that she loved Shayne and would not let anyone hurt him. So, Annie possibly sacrificed her freedom for the kids by calling Reva and telling her everything. Annie still couldn't get Josh out of her system though, and proceeded to drug him. After a failed attempt to kidnap Lizzie Spaulding, Annie is on the run from the authorities.
